Learn how to make puppets

Special to the ReformerWEST CHESTERFIELD, N.H. — Eric Weiss, a teacher with Nature's Classroom and Artist, practicing the art of puppet building is coming to Magpie Art Studio in West Chesterfield, N.H. for the month of February to teach an array of puppetry classes. He will offer kid's classes like sock puppets, recycled puppets, and basic foam and rod puppets. I will also be teaching adult classes on how to build more of the professional looking puppets learning about foam carving, simple mechanisms, and patterned puppets. All classes are for beginners with no prior puppet building experience needed, just bring your creativity. Homeslice's classes (All classes adult and kids, are geared for beginner students)Kids Classes: All supplies will be providedSaturday Feb. 4 at Magpie Art Studio (10 a.m. to noon)Sock Puppets — (Age group — elementary school K-4th grade) Basic puppetry class geared for small children to teach the basics of creating a character and how to make a puppet using socks and basic craft supplies.Workshop: Tuition $10Friday Feb.10 at Magpie Art Studio (6 to 8 p.m.) or, Saturday, Feb. 11 at Magpie Art Studio (10 a.m. to noon)Recycled Puppets — (Age group elementary school 3rd-6th grade)Another basic puppetry class geared for younger students to teach how create a puppet using recycled materials. This class teaches more how to look at objects from an abstract view, and how to use their shapes and textures to create shape or design in your puppet as well as looking at basic movement in puppets.Workshop: Tuition $10Friday, Feb. 17 at Magpie Art Studio (6 to 8 p.m.) or, Saturday, Feb. 18 at Magpie Art Studio (10 a.m. to noon)Basic foam and rod puppet- (Age group — middle school 5th to 7th grade)Basic puppetry class designed to teach about creating a character in a puppet as well as how to make a simple foam & rod puppet. Students will build their own foam rod puppet and create its character.Workshop: Tuition $15Friday, Feb. 3 at Magpie Art Studio (6 to 9 p.m.) or, Sunday, Feb, 12 at Magpie Art Studio (1 to 4 p.m.) Foam carving and simple mech puppet (7th and 8th grade)In this class students will build a muffin puppet. I will teach about how to build a simple mechanism, how to paint and dye foam, and how to carve and sculpt foam to build a puppet. Students will also learn the diversity of how these techniques can be used in other puppet applications.3-hour workshop: Tuition $150, materials $75
