Leland & Gray girls to face Wildcats in opener

Posted

BRATTLEBORO — Eight starters have returned for the Leland & Gray varsity girls soccer team, which went 9-5 last season before falling to Stowe 3-2 in a first-round playoff game.

Among those returnees are dangerous weapons Arin Bates and Ellie Longo. The former exploded for 40 goals and 36 dimes in her first three seasons combined, while the latter has scored 25 goals and dished out seven assists in that time.

"Arin and Ellie will be looking to score a ton of goals this season, with the help of Alya Ryan, Emma O'Brien and Ansley Henderson," mentioned Leland & Gray coach Lucas Bates.

Back between the posts for the Rebels is Sydney Hescock, who had four clean sheets a year ago. She made 91 total saves and allowed just 17 tallies as a junior.

Solid defensive backs Bay Holmes, Carly Lane and Skye Richardson will again keep the pressure off of their keeper.

"There are 10 to 11 incoming freshmen that will be looking for time on the field, and they are a strong group of players. I think they were undefeated during their last season in middle school," said the Rebels coach, adding that Abby Towle, Izzy Ameden, Anisley Meyer, Ruthie Wright and Makaila Morse are the ones that participated in the team's pick-up summer soccer.

Leland & Gray will host Twin Valley in a Sept. 3 season opener at 4:30 p.m.

"We will also try to have a JV team this season and will be asking the new eighth graders to join our JV team during tryouts," coach Bates stated.
