Letter: Coming to a good doctor's defense

Editor of the Reformer,

Doctor Guerts: Front page lead story ("Doctor affiliated with Grace Cottage disciplined for overprescribing," Oct. 1). Are you kidding me, Reformer, you should be ashamed. My wife and I were patients of Doctor Guerts for the past 15 years. We found him to be one of the most compassionate and knowledgeable doctors we have ever known. On one particular occasion, when local specialists had given up on diagnosing an illness I had, he was the one that persisted and referred me to DHMC, where they not only diagnosed the illness, but performed the surgery to correct it. My wife and I are saddened to see Doctor Guerts leave Vermont, and hope this misfortune is not behind his moving on. Where ever he goes, his patients will be fortunate to have him as their primary care doctor. May God bless you, Doctor Guerts, where ever you practice. I must ask: why wasn't the original doctor or the psychiatrist or the pharmacy that filled the prescriptions names mentioned?
