Letter: NorthStar offers welcome opportunity

Editor of the Reformer:

New England Coalition's objections to the NorthStar plan for Vermont Yankee are at risk of putting us several steps behind on their chance to receive economic and environmental benefit sooner than Entergy's original plan ("Vermont Yankee concerns "unfounded," companies say," July 26).

Vermont Yankee must be decommissioned - whether now or 40-50 years down the road. If NorthStar's plan is approved, Windham County will begin to receive these benefits within 10 years. If not, the site will continue to sit until about 2070, and the cost of the work will increase too.

Frankly, NEC's demands for the extent of environmental remediation will only put unnecessary delays on the decommissioning process. Coalition members have wrung their hands over potential contamination levels in the soil and groundwater not justified by the 2014 site assessment. NEC should look to the true experts - those who were present at the site when the assessment was conducted - rather than claim themselves as experts.

If NorthStar has the expertise and funding to complete the job ahead of schedule, let's welcome this opportunity.
