Letter: Thinking it through on guns

Editor of the Reformer:

Members of the gun lobby who keep citing the Second Amendment apparently haven't thought things through. Most Americans don't oppose ownership of hunting rifles and handguns. No one is coming around to take away your guns. What many want to control is assault weapons like the AR-15, which the Founding Fathers obviously didn't have in mind when they passed that Amendment. Many also want to limit gun ownership by unstable people, although it's sometimes difficult to predict who will go bonkers and start gunning down strangers.

But if the gun lobby keeps citing the Second Amendment as a reason to own AR-15s, reasonable people may start to think about repealing the Second Amendment. Is that what the gun lobby wants?
