Letter: Veterans' Home enriched by veteran-owned farms

At the Vermont Veterans' Home (VVH) we seek to enhance life for our Veteran Heroes residing at the Home. As such, VVH has been in discussions with Liz Ruffa and Northshire Grows to coordinate a monthly special meal with ingredients solely sourced from Veteran owned farms in Vermont.

Our first Veteran farm raised meal was served attaining great success and enjoyment. Harwood Homestead in Pownal delivered Red Ranger (breed) chickens. They are pasture raised, free range, and organic. We set up our new carving station in Patriot Hall and carved as ordered. This new service in Patriot Hall brought back the feeling of going to grandma's house for Sunday dinner.

Harwood Homestead is a veteran owned farm. They are a family of 5 hardworking, fun loving Vermonters. They love farming and use grassroots principles, regenerative practices; and above all, a deep passion to provide healthy, humanely raised meat, eggs, and vegetables for our community.

Farmer Ashley, enlisted in the Marine and left for boot camp on Parris Island, South Carolina in August of 2000. He graduated Marine Corps boot camp with Platoon 1089 1st Battalion Delta Company on November 10, 2000. Ashley served first as a rifleman as all Marines do, and as a motor transport mechanic. He deployed to Kuwait in January of 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Before being honorably discharged October 11, of 2004 he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Ashley works a full-time job in addition to the farm; however, this is the first time he can honestly say his family is "living for a living". Harwood Homestead Farm is both proud, and humbled families would choose to trust us to provide them with healthful food. They do what they love, and it shows.
