Local artist John Dimick to speak and paint

BRATTLEBORO - Watercolor artist John S. Dimick will give a talk and demonstration of his painting techniques from 4 to 6 p.m., on Saturday at Vermont Artisan Designs. Admission is free.

Dimick's paintings of "In and Around Brattleboro" are featured at Vermont Artisan Designs for the month of June. He has captured various scenes of Main Street, Elliot Street, the Brooks House and other sites around town.

Dimick, a member of the Vermont Watercolor Society, recently spent time at the Vermont Studio Center to work on his painting skills.

For Saturday's presentation, Dimick will work on another painting of Brattleboro during his talk.

Dimick will explain how and why he sketches from a photograph. He uses a grid system to set up a painting and works with it to find a balance between detail and looseness in his work.

He will have a notebook that shows the various steps in the progression of several paintings in the current show.

In addition to the original paintings, Vermont Artisan Designs also has limited edition prints and cards of Dimick's work. Vermont Artisan Designs is located at 106 Main St. It has been named as one of the top 10 galleries in Vermont. It is open seven days a week and at vtart.com and on Facebook.
