Local golfer set to play for U.S. Amateur title


Local golfer Jacob Zaranek will compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 12-18 at famed Pinehurst Country Club and Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.

Zaranek, a resident of South Deerfield, Mass., plays out of Brattleboro Country Club, where his father, Michael, is director of golf.

Zaranek qualified for one of the 312 spots at the national championship by shooting a 6-under-par 134 over two days at a qualifying tournament at Longmeadow (Mass.) Country Club last month.

He had a stretch of five straight birdies on the second day, closing with a 5-under 65 to earn the second of two qualifying bids.

Qualifying medal play rounds for the U.S. Amateur Championship are set for Monday and Tuesday. Zaranek will tee off at 2:25 p.m. Monday and at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday.

The top 64 qualifiers will then compete in the match play single elimination tournament Aug. 14-15.

The match play portion of the event will be televised on Fox Sports 1.

Zaranek is a rising junior on the Division I Fairfield (Conn.) University golf team.

He competed in multiple tournaments over the past month to prepare for the amateur championship, including the Vermont Amateur July 9-11 at Rutland Country Club.

He tied for second at the Vermont Amateur with a 1-over-par four-round total of 281.
