DALTON, Mass. — Tobin Lonergan went off for six goals as the Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls lacrosse team outscored Wahconah 17-15 in a shootout on Thursday.

"Our first half was pretty inconsistent, with a lack of intensity and too many turnovers. In the second half, the players did a much better job of maintaining possession and creating scoring opportunities. It was nice to walk away with the win," said BUHS coach Michael Lonergan.

The game was tied at 6-6 and 11-11 before the Colonels (5-1) took control.

Meg Ayotte and Sam Cragin each scored four goals for the winners. Liz Day chipped in with two goals and three assists, while reigning Brattleboro Reformer Athlete of the Week Liv Romo also scored.

Ayotte had a strong all-around game at both ends, according to her coach, and showed good composure at critical times. Lonergan's tallies came at key points in the game and Cragin was strong in transition.

The Colonels were coming off of a 13-11 loss to Burr and Burton.

Day erupted for four goals to lead the purple and white in that showdown. Cragin (hat trick), Lonergan (2 goals), Ayotte (1 goal), and Romo (1 goal) also contributed to the attack.

Liv Stent anchored Brattleboro's defense and was also strong in her team's transition game.

The Colonels will play at Amherst tonight and then host Rutland on Monday at 7 p.m.
