Major milestone - Squires will turn 90 on Aug. 15
GUILFORD — Born during the Great Depression, Shirley Squires will celebrate her 90th birthday on Aug. 15 amid a global pandemic.
The Guilford resident has lived through World War II and the Vietnam War, Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, JFK's assassination, Neil Armstrong's moonwalk, Secretariat's Triple Crown sweep, Bill Clinton's affair, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
"She is a loving, thoughtful, kind and giving woman who we are all very proud of and love very much," said Tina Goldsmith Squires. "I have never met anyone who had an unkind word to say about my mother-in-law. She is amazing!"
Following the death of her son Ron, who was Vermont's first openly gay legislator, Squires participated in her first AIDS Project of Southern Vermont walk in 1993. She has been the leading fundraiser for the event many times since.
Squires is also known for her nativity display, which she started after her husband died in 1992. The 1,500 creches fill her two-story home and garage during each holiday season.
She is a very active member of Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church and is a member of Guilford Cares — helping her community members with rides to appointments or to get errands done.
"She is an accomplished photographer, and her photos of our children and grandchildren are gold to us," Goldsmith Squires said of her mother-in-law, who was born the same year as actor Sir Sean Connery, coach Don Shula, singer Ray Charles and baseball owner George Steinbrenner.
If you'd like to help Squires celebrate her 90th birthday, you are encouraged to send a card to her at 1890 Guilford Center Road, Guilford VT, 05301.
