Martinez, Hiner face off on gridiron

CASTLETON — Former Brattleboro Union High School teammates Conor Hiner and Tony Martinez faced off on Saturday as the Plymouth State football team overpowered Castleton University 38-0 in the season opener.

Hiner, a sophomore linebacker, made one tackle for the winners. He helped the Panthers limit the hosts to just 50 rushing yards and 111 more through the air.

Martinez, who started at quarterback for the Colonels but has been converted to a receiver at Castleton, finished with five catches for 32 yards. Quarterback Mitchell Caron completed passes to Martinez for gains of seven, four, five, 10 and six yards.

Hiner and Martinez helped the Colonels make the playoffs in 2015. The duo then guided the purple and white to a 4-5 record as seniors.

Castleton (0-1) will play at Fitchburg State on Saturday at 2 p.m. Plymouth State (1-0) will host Western Connecticut on Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
