Masons present scholarships to graduating seniors


BRATTLEBORO — On Tuesday June 11, Worshipful Master Robert Baldauf and Senior Warden Kris Johnston from the Brattleboro Lodge of Masons attended the Brattleboro Union High School's Windham County Career Center Annual Awards Banquet at the American Legion on Linden Street and presented one of their $500 scholarships to Makayla LaFlam.

LaFlam has been an outstanding Career Center student, being on the honor roll all four years of high school. In addition to her course load and holding down several jobs, she has been a member of the BUHS softball team, president of FFA, volunteer for Girls on the Run, president of 4H, and Horse Event volunteer.

Her goals in college, influenced by her agricultural studies and working with horses, is to major in therapeutic equine science. This will combine her desire to help people and her love of horses.

Later, on June 20, Baldauf presented the lodge's second scholarship at the Mason's monthly meeting to Joshua Nordheim.

During his academic high school career Nordheim was inducted into the National Honor Society and graduated with honors. In high school he was active in the Future Business Leaders of America, serving one year as an officer of the club, and participated in the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary's Junior Rotarian program (four years).

In sports Nordheim was involved in soccer, basketball, lacrosse and tennis, playing four years on the varsity tennis team. Civically Nordheim volunteered for Green Up Day, 3-on-3 basketball tournament and local trail maintenance for mountain bike trails. Nordheim plans to attend the University of New Hampshire in the fall to study business with a concentration in marketing.
