SAXTONS RIVER — Terri Mateer, whose maiden name is McCarty, performed her Off-Broadway show "A Kind Shot" on Friday evening at Vermont Academy.

Among those in attendance at Nita Chokas Theater were Mateer's Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls basketball teammate Barbie Barrett and her former English teacher Nancy Olson. Mateer graduated from BUHS in 1983, went on to play college basketball at Florida State University, and played one year of professional hoops in France.

The storyteller's only prop was a basketball, which she dribbled as she first appeared on stage. She shared 30 years of her extraordinary life with the audience, talking about such things as sexual abuse and playing in pick-up games while attending FSU.

After the performance, Mateer held a question and answer session. She then talked to some of her fans one-on-one before they exited.
