Cougars outscore Colonel girls, 9-1

BRATTLEBORO — For anyone playing fantasy futbol, you might want to think about trading for Devyn Beliveau-Gale.

The talented Mount Mansfield varsity girls soccer player unloaded five shots on Monday at Tenney Field and tallied twice, helping the Cougars to a 9-1 victory over the host Colonels.

The visitors put on a passing clinic in the early going and took a 5-1 lead in the first 40 minutes. Dez Youngman struck twice in that span, while Macey Wissell, Skye Fitzhugh and Beliveau-Gale also scored.

Brattleboro goalie Megyn Ayotte made six saves in the opening half, with the highlight being a diving stop to her right to rob Fitzhugh on a penalty kick. She also caught a blast by Lauren Flewelling and went upstairs to get her hands on Beliveau-Gale's controversial goal.

Trailing 1-0, the Colonels pulled even when Ashley Dierkes beat Mount Mansfield keeper Ursula Muran at the 26:55 mark.

It was one of few quality chances for Brattleboro, which got nice runs from Rachael Rooney and Sophia Capy, free kicks on target by Samantha Cragin and Hailey Derosia, and a breakaway by Axis Balsley-Petraska.

Defensively, Juniper Dimatteo-Le Pape and Venus Fu each made a nice play for the purple and white. The former sacrificed her body to block a shot from Ava Esmay and the latter used her head to deny an attempt from Flewelling.

The Cougars added four more winners in the second half to put it out of reach. Beliveau-Gale delivered on a restart, Fiona Tynion put away a crossing pass from Flonn Manning, Allie Charland attacked from the left wing, and Esmay knocked in a loose ball in front.

The 0-3 Colonels will host Saint Johnsbury on Saturday at 11 a.m.
