Pacers win third straight
HINSDALE, N.H. — As the leaf peepers have been driving slowly along Route 119 and the Jack-O'-Lanterns have looked on from doorsteps around Hinsdale High School, one thing has been crystal clear.
Greg Howard is "Mr. October."
The forward had a hat trick and a couple of assists on Tuesday, giving him eight goals this month, to power the Hinsdale varsity boys soccer team to an 8-2 victory over Newport.
"That's three wins in a row for us," said first-year Pacers coach Syla Sengaloun, whose team trounced Franklin 10-1 on Oct. 3 and then defeated Monadnock 3-1 on Oct. 4.
Leading 4-2 with 17:40 remaining, Hinsdale pulled away from Newport with four unanswered tallies. Jason Cowan buried an off-balance shot from the right wing and also drove a penalty kick just inside the right post, Howard completed his hat trick, and Arth Patel delivered from the left side to cap the scoring.
"Our keeper had six or seven good saves for us," noted Sengaloun.
Ryan Labby's highlight was stopping a penalty kick by Hayden Palmer. He also robbed Sean Moody on four different occasions.
The Pacers held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal over the first 40 minutes. A pretty passing combination from Arth Patel to Dylan Harden to Howard set up the best of those, however Howard's rocket from 15 yards away was somehow denied by Newport netminder Garrett Harold. Patel later found an open Howard and he passed to Harden, whose shot sailed high.
Moody would run a rebound into the goal to give the visiting Tigers a 1-0 lead about 10 minutes in. Harden answered on a beautiful move along the left side to pull Hinsdale even before the break.
"We didn't play our best in the first half. I was a little nervous," stated the Hinsdale coach. "In the second half, we were able to control the ball, our short passing game was better, and we had good communication."
Howard, who exited the game late in the first half and warned his teammates that he felt like he might throw up, scored back-to-back goals early in the second half to put the Pacers ahead 3-1. Harden would then tap in a crossing pass to make it 4-1.
After Moody struck again with 17:40 remaining, it was all Hinsdale down the stretch.
Howard (3 goals and 2 assists), Cowan (2 goals and 2 assists) and Harden (2 goals and 1 assist) were the major forces for the winners. Patel also scored, while Calvin Atkins, Aidan Davis, Alex Gaffney and Aiden MacDonald all set up one tally.
The 5-7 Pacers will host Sunapee on Thursday at 4 p.m.
