Post 5 improves to 9-4 overall
WESTMINSTER — When Adam Newton grounded out in the fourth inning of Thursday night's American Legion baseball game, an impressive streak had finally come to an end.
The Brattleboro slugger had not been retired in his six other at-bats in Westminster this year.
Newton, who had went 4-for-4 during his varsity team's victory at Bellows Falls in April, went 2-for-3 with a pair of two-run singles as Post 5 defeated host Post 37 by the score of 17-2 in his return.
"He hit the ball very well for us," said winning coach Eric Libardoni, whose team improved to 9-4 overall.
Brattleboro entered the contest with confidence, having went 3-1 in the recent Keene Tournament and then hanging on for a one-run victory over White River Junction the night before.
"We're moving in the right direction," noted the Post 5 skipper. "We've been stealing a lot of bases during this stretch. We've been aggressive on the bases."
The visitors scored five runs in the first frame and added four more in the second to take a quick 9-0 lead. Newton drilled a two-run single in each inning, Jack Pattison hit one of his own in the first, Dan Petrie and Christian Thomsen each belted an RBI double, and Hunter Beebe chipped in with a single that scored one.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Jeremy Rounds was lights out. In his three innings of work, he fanned two, walked two and gave up zero hits.
"I didn't even realize he had a no-hitter going when I took him out," admitted Libardoni. "Rounds was good tonight. He throws a lot of strikes and he throws his curves for strikes. Nothing really rattles him."
With relievers on the hill, each team scored a couple of runs in the fifth inning. Chris Frost's RBI single to right was the highlight for Brattleboro, while the hosts got a single from Rex Hill, an RBI sacrifice fly by Andrew Peloso, and a run-scoring single to deep left off the bat of Clayton Groenewold.
Brattleboro would win by the mercy rule after tacking on six more runs in the sixth. Beebe (2 hits) and Thomsen (2 hits) each singled during that surge.
First baseman Griff Waryas was the gold glover for Post 37, chasing down a foul ball in the third and then scooping up an errant throw in the fourth. Newton (SS), Tyler Millerick (2B) and Rounds (P) all made a spectacular defensive play for Post 5.
