Purple Gang advances to D-2 finals

MANCHESTER — Shane Clark ran the ball 22 times for 114 yards and two scores to help the No. 4 Bellows Falls varsity football team to a 22-16 upset of top-ranked Burr and Burton in Saturday's Division 2 semifinal.

It was the second year in a row that the Purple Gang knocked out the Bulldogs, with last fall's shocker coming in the championship game.

BF quarterback Logan Cota was 3 of 12 passing for 22 yards on Saturday. He also carried the ball nine times for 28 yards and a touchdown, and he caught a Griffin Waryas pass.

Sam Mellish finished with five tackles for the Bellows Falls defense. Cota picked off a pass, while Dylan Clark, Jared Zobkiw and Ben Asack all had a sack.

The defending champion Terriers (8-2) will take on second-seeded Fair Haven (9-1) in the D-2 championship game on Saturday at Rutland High School at 2 p.m. That contest will be sandwiched by the D-3 final between Windsor and Woodstock at 11 a.m. and the D-1 matchup pitting Saint Johnsbury against Hartford at 5 p.m.
