Rebels defeat Black River, Springfield

TOWNSHEND — The Leland & Gray varsity boys basketball team went 2-1 this week, including victories over Black River and Springfield.

Dakota Fillion (14 points), Kaie Quigley (13), Adam Culver (12) and Lucas Newton (10) had the hot hands for the Rebels in a 59-45 decision over the Presidents on Monday. Culver and Fillion combined for 16 rebounds, while Newton added seven assists and three steals.

That was followed by a 44-26 loss to Proctor. Austin Morse (6 points and 13 rebounds), Quigley (6 points and 8 rebounds) and Culver (7 assists) led the way.

"Defensively, we played well," said Leland & Gray coach Brud Sanderson. "Proctor's defense caused us to adjust our shots and we struggled on offense."

Morse made a couple of defensive stops late in Thursday's game, helping the Rebels (3-6) to a 48-46 win over the Cosmos. Newton and Quigley poured in 11 points apiece, Culver chipped in with 10, and Nathan Claussen netted nine.

Snowshoe for the Cure

STRATTON — Komen New England Snowshoe for the Cure will be held on Jan. 21 at the Sun Bowl on Stratton Mountain. It is a family-friendly event with fun for everyone, including a kids' snowshoe dash.

Snowshoe for the Cure allows Komen New England to support thousands of local families through funding for critical breast care services and groundbreaking research. Participants can race or walk as part of a team, or as an individual, or volunteer, donate, or become a supporting sponsor to help Komen reach its Bold Goal of reducing breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the United States by 2026.

As in past years, Snowshoe for the Cure will kick-off at Stratton's Sun Bowl Base Area at 9 a.m. with a friendly, competitive 3K snowshoe race, with prizes awarded to the top three female and male racers and the top three survivors. There are two non-competitive snowshoe walks (a 3K and a 5K).

There is also a free Snowshoe Dash for ages 5 and under, so be sure to bring the kids. No snowshoe experience is required. As a matter of fact, snowshoes aren't even required; free loaner snowshoes will be available from official snowshoe partner Tubbs Snowshoes, Inc. (while supplies last). All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt.

To register online through Jan. 19, visit To volunteer or get more information, call Linda at 802-362-2733.
