Rebels earn 4-2 victory over Bellows Falls
WESTMINSTER — Leland & Gray varsity baseball coach Marty Testo went into Wednesday's season opener thinking that he would only allow starter Christian Thomsen to throw between 80 and 100 pitches.
But the senior ace had other ideas.
After telling his skipper that he was fine in the late stages, Thomsen would go the distance to lead the visiting Rebels to a 4-2 victory over Bellows Falls.
"Thomsen was tough today. He made really big pitches when he had to," mentioned Testo, whose hurler averaged about 17 pitches per frame.
With the score deadlocked at 2-2, the visitors scored an unearned run in the sixth and another in the seventh to get the win. Dylan Greenwood and Trevor Plimpton each had a single in that span, while Kaie Quigley turned heads by fouling off five pitches during his final at-bat.
"We've gotta grind out at-bats. We've gotta put the ball in play," noted Testo.
Plimpton led the winners with two hits. Chris Bovat, Thomsen, Quigley and Greenwood added one hit apiece.
"It was a good baseball game to start the season," Testo stated. "Our young guys gained some valuable experience."
Jack Burke drew a one-out walk and eventually scored on a passed ball to give the Terriers a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.
Plimpton would single to start Leland & Gray's two-run third frame. The highlights during that surge were RBI doubles by Quigley and Bovat.
Grady Lockerby then pulled Bellows Falls even at 2-2 with a triple to right-center that scored Burke in the fifth.
Thomsen would dig down deep and throw a pair of scoreless innings for the 1-0 Rebels. He struck out 14, walked four, hit three batters and gave up three hits on the day.
"I can't say enough about our catcher (Ayden Bills). It's hard to play that position against Bellows Falls, because they bunt and steal so much," commented Testo.
Jack Brown went 6 2/3 innings for the 1-2 Terriers, fanning 10 and walking just two. Lockerby led the hosts with two hits, while Elliott Graham contributed with a single.
