Selectboard proclaims December as Reformer Christmas Stocking month

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Selectboard has proclaimed December as Brattleboro Reformer Christmas Stocking month

The board signed a proclamation acknowledging the work done by the volunteer Christmas Stocking board, which raises about $90,000 every year to buy winter clothing for children in the region.

"I see the people they reach and I know the hard work that goes into this program 12 months out of the year," Selectboard Chairman Dick DeGray said. "It is amazing and heart warming to be a part of a community that takes care of those who are less fortunate."

The organization raises money during the holiday season and purchases clothing throughout the year. Hats, gloves, scarves and boots are then given out the following fall before the winter weather sets in.

The Brattleboro Reformer Christmas Stocking served 655 families in 2011 and provided winter clothing for 1,369 children.

In the proclamation, the Selectboard recognized that the Christmas Stocking has been active for 76 years and that people from throughout the community take part in all aspects of the group's work.
