BRATTLEBORO — Brattleboro Union High School soccer fans would normally have Oct. 23 circled on their calendar, not wanting to miss their varsity boys team's game in Bennington against the rival Patriots. But they will likely have to rely on social media updates instead.

"Mount Anthony and Mill River (are opting for) no spectators right now," said BUHS Athletic Director Chris Sawyer.

The pandemic has also affected football throughout the state, with teams now playing a 7-on-7 touch version and the postseason having been scratched. The 2019 Division 2 champion Colonels will debut at Springfield on Sept. 25 and play for the Elwell Trophy on Oct. 23 at Natowich Field.

Chad Pacheco has returned after guiding the Purple and White to a perfect 11-0 season on the gridiron. Keith Arnold (cross country), Ben Brewer (boys soccer), Ron Svec (girls soccer) and Erin Cooke (field hockey) are the other head coaches at BUHS this fall.

Cooke's stickers will lead things off with a contest against the Cosmos on Sept. 21. That is, if the Department of Health moves BUHS and Springfield from Step II to Step III by then — meaning those schools are open for in-person instruction with distancing measures.

Facial coverings are required to be worn by all players, coaches, officials, staff and spectators this season. Cross-country runners will be allowed to compete without masks.

The Brattleboro varsity boys soccer team, which won the last two John James Tournament titles, is set to host Hartford on Sept. 25. Freshmen Ayoub Lajhar and Paul McGillion were named the best offensive and defensive players, respectively, at last year's John James.
