BRATTLEBORO — Students from Saint Michael School participated in Fire Safety and Prevention training on Thursday, Oct. 10, as part of National Fire Prevention Week. The school welcomed firefighter Adam Martin of the Northampton (Mass.) Fire Department into the elementary classrooms to speak with the children about fire safety and prevention. Martin, whose wife works at the school, reviewed best practices such as "Stop, drop and roll," creating a family escape plan, finding a grown up if they discover matches, and learning to stay low under smoke in case of a fire. He coached the children in how to check their doors for a fire to determine if it was safe for them to open the door or not. And most importantly, he taught them all about the gear he wears while on the job to help alleviate any concerns the children might have if they encountered a firefighter in a real emergency situation. Talking about all of the equipment and slowly seeing him put everything on reassures the children that firefighters, in full gear, are not scary after all.
