BRATTLEBORO — After losing in a first-round playoff game in each of the last four seasons, the Bellows Falls varsity girls basketball team has dropped from Division 2 to Division 3.

"Like a lot of rural schools in the state, our enrollment has been decreasing year after year," said BF coach Todd Wells. "This group has been unable to get past the first round of the playoffs the last couple years, so hopefully we can use that as fuel and get that curse off our back."

The Terriers, who went 15-6 last season, will open up at Fair Haven on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

"We have a strong and experienced returning group this season," Wells commented.

The smooth-shooting Taylor Goodell does a little bit of everything, for instance she finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists during a game against Arlington last winter. Also returning is senior Halle Dickerson, who scored a team-high 12 points in a playoff loss to Springfield.

Both of them were named Marble Valley League B Division 1st Teamers as juniors.

Sophomore super Maya Waryas, known for her five game-winning field hockey goals in six total postseason games, is also back. The roster also includes Jaia Caron, who was voted the Brattleboro Reformer Athlete of the Fall.

"We have a new JV coach (Sara Lovell) and assistant coach (Corrie Smith). Both are BFUHS alum that were very successful girls basketball players under coach Jayne Barber. I am excited to have both Sara and Corrie added to the coaching staff this season. They bring a lot of Purple tradition, experience and energy," said Wells.

The home opener for the Terriers is set for Dec. 23 versus Windsor at 7 p.m.

Bellows Falls roster: Coaches — Todd Wells, Sara Lovell, Corrie Smith. Seniors — Emily Bazin, Halle Dickerson, Taylor Goodell, Madison Pencek, Molly Potter, Amyra Terena. Junior — Sydney Bazin. Sophomores — Jaia Caron, Maya Waryas. Freshman — Phaedra Cilibrasi.
