The many uses for math

BONDVILLE — Members of the 5th and 6th grade math classes at The Mountain School at Winhall recently completed lessons culminating in an all school "Computation Cafe."

The fifth graders worked on and completed "Baking with Fractions" projects where they worked with partners and a dessert recipe to find common denominators and add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. Students then created advertisement posters with images, ingredient lists, directions, and all their math work.

Sixth-grade students created algebraic word problems pertaining to drink recipes they found and decided they would like to make as part of the menu for their cafe. Students also worked out problems dealing with running a business such as taxes, staffing, and payroll.

Both classes learned and reflected upon what it might take to run a business and to see that math really is a part of our lives.

Students in grades K - 4 were invited to the "Computation Caf " where they "bought" baked goods by solving grade-level appropriate math problems created by the fifth graders.
