Trail runners overcome obstacle at Fun Run

BRATTLEBORO — A large tree branch that had fallen across the Fun Run trail provided an interesting obstacle for seven runners during a 2.5-mile race on Wednesday night along Upper Dummerston Road.

It didn't seem to bother David Hiler, who finished first in 22:29 — just nine seconds ahead of runner-up Scott Hamm (22:38). Those two were followed home by Lester Humphreys (24:40), Fred Ross III (24:40), John Duff (24:59), Bob Lance (26:35) and Jackie Ferencz (29:14).

In the out-and-back road races, Leah Sutton-Smith, Raji Ballou and Tony Blofson all prevailed.

Sutton-Smith cruised to victory in the one-mile heat, finishing in a time of 8:20. After that, it was Hailey Richards (10:37), Peyton Evans (10:37), Kaylin Richards (12:28) and Tammy Richards (12:30).

Ballou, who is a race walker, took the two-miler in 19:24. Felicia Dudek was next in 21:48, while Zoe Humphreys ended up third in 28:04.

Blofson easily won the three-mile event — blasting off to a big lead and crossing the wire in 24:15. Shane Covey (28:13), Todd Smith (28:40) and Serge Pouliot (37:33) rounded out the field.

The Fun Runs, which are directed by Gary and Chris Montgomery, start near the entrance to the Brattleboro Country Club. The next one is scheduled for July 24 at 6:30 p.m.
