Truck crash spills concrete headed for Vermont Yankee
ANDOVER — A wideload truck and trailer loaded with more than 107 tons of concrete destined for the shuttered Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant decommissioning project crashed in Andover Friday morning, Vermont State Police said Saturday.
The load, as well as the truck and trailer, went off Route 11 in Andover and overturned, near the intersection with Middletown Road, at about 9:48 a.m., police said.
Vermont State Police Sgt.
Ryan Wood said the concrete was headed to Vernon and the nuclear plant, which is currently undergoing decommissioning. Decommissioning, which is expected to last about six years, started in 2019.
Police issued a news release
Saturday after the concrete was "recovered' by the side of the road, which necessitated the road to be closed for five to six hours, with a detour put in place. Police did not give information about the truck or the driver of the load, only saying it was headed to Vernon. The "recovery" of the concrete was overseen by the Agency of Transportation.
Police said the load was in excess of 215,000 pounds.
A spokesman for NorthStar Vermont Yankee LLC, the owner of the nuclear plant which is also conducting the demolition and cleanup of the plant, didn't return email messages sent Saturday or Sunday.
NorthStar has been shipping its low-level radioactive waste from the demolition project in special casks via rail to a low-level radioactive waste facility in western Texas. Its high-level radioactive waste is already stored on site in Vernon in large concrete and steel casks.
Vermont State Police Lt.
Hugh O'Donnell said further information will be released in the next few days, and the crash is still under investigation. No one was injured and no fluids leaked from the truck, police said.
