Vermont Academy girls soccer team repeats

BRATTLEBORO — The feline family represented on Sunday.

The Lions, Jaguars and Bengals all won on the gridiron, and the Wildcats prevailed on the pitch.

"It is an incredible accomplishment to win the New England Prep School Championship for the second year in a row," said Vermont Academy varsity girls soccer coach Abbey Edwards, whose team edged Hamden Hall 1-0 in the Class D final. "VA's teamwork, smart and disciplined play, and mental toughness were the key factors in bringing home another championship."

The Wildcats went 11-4-4 during the regular season and earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament. They beat Hebron Academy of Maine 3-1 in a quarterfinal, routed the top-ranked Walkinson School 5-0 in a semi, and then nipped the Connecticut team in the title tilt on Sunday.

Chloe Aurard had a hat trick, with the third goal being set up by Angelina LaClair, in the first-round contest — a rematch of the 2016 championship game.

Kristyna Kaltounova and Aurard each tallied twice in the second-rounder, while Guilford's Allie Buckley chipped in with a breakaway goal. Keeper Kyra Rideout, of Hinsdale, N.H., saved three penalty shots for VA.

Twenty minutes into the championship game, Aurard scored the game winner.

"From there on out, VA focused on shutting down a skilled and fast attack from Hamden Hall's midfield and forwards," noted coach Edwards. "Our defense had one of their strongest games of the season and worked together to frustrate Hamden Hall's attack. On offense, forwards Gwen Coger and Kristyna Kaltounova kept the Hamden Hall defense on their toes and helped to solidify the victory."
