Volunteers needed for GOTR event
BRATTLEBORO — Girls on the Run Vermont (GOTRVT) has announced that its annual Southern Vermont 5k celebration will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12 at Brattleboro Union High School. This celebratory event, presented by Against The Grain Gourmet, is the culmination of GOTRVT's 10-week after school empowerment program for local girls in grades 3-8, and is open to the public. The community is encouraged to support the girls as runners or sideline supporters, though the event still seeks 100 more volunteers to help make the day a success.
From face painting/hair spraying and handing out beads, to equipment setup and breakdown there are many opportunities to get involved. Individuals, families and groups— school clubs, sports teams, etc. — can sign up in advance to volunteer at www.gotrvt.org/volunteer. Community service hours are offered for high school students.
"This day is more than just a 5k," said Nancy Heydinger, Executive Director of GOTRVT, "it's a celebration of confidence, connection, uniqueness and all of the goals the girls have accomplished in our program over the past few months — with their grand goal to cross the finish line alongside their friends, family, and community. The emotions of this day are indescribable and can only truly be felt when experienced first-hand."
Girls on the Run Vermont has empowered more than 42,000 girls since its inception in 1999. This year, the Girls on the Run program — along with the Heart & Sole curriculum for middle school girls — is reaching more than 2,600 girls at over 170 sites in the state. Proceeds from the 5k event benefit Girls on the Run Vermont's Every Girl Fund. This fund helps to ensure that every girl in Vermont can participate in the program through automatic subsidies, and additional financial assistance to those girls who need it the most.
Early-bird registration for the Girls on the Run Vermont 5k is $10 for children and $20 for adults. New this year, GOTRVT Alumni are invited to return and run for a discounted fee of $10. Register online at www.gotrvt.org/southern-5k until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 10. Day-of registration will take place from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Brattleboro Union High School, with entry fees $10 for children and $30 for adults. All 2018 GOTRVT girls and coaches do not need to register for the event.
As a non-profit, Girls on the Run Vermont relies on its generous sponsors to help make its program possible throughout the state. Returning this year are the 5k Presenting Sponsor, Against The Grain Gourmet, and proud Hydration Sponsor, Foard Panel.
Along with the Presenting and Hydration sponsors, additional support for the Southern Vermont 5k comes from BlueCross BlueShield of Vermont, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Brattleboro Orthodontic Specialists, Cabot Creamery, ClearChoiceMD, DMI Paving, G.S. Precision, Mercedes Benz of Springfield, Northeast Home Loan, Price Chopper, River Valley Credit Union, Trust Company of Vermont, UNFI, Vermont Moving & Storage, and 92.7 Bratt-FM (formerly WKVT/Iconic Rock).
