Waryas prevails in voting booth battle

Posted

BRATTLEBORO — Twenty years after George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by just five Electoral votes, Griffin Waryas and Eliya Petrie found themselves in a similar battle.

When this recount was concluded, Waryas nipped Petrie 314-304 to earn Brattleboro Reformer Athlete of the Week honors.

"You're awesome Griffin!! Good luck!!!" wrote Suzanne Stagner on her online ballot.

The Bellows Falls varsity boys basketball team's senior captain was nominated after finishing with nine points, two rebounds, three assists and four steals during a 50-45 win over Arlington. The "likes" then started piling up for he and Petrie, who had posted consecutive shutouts as the Brattleboro varsity girls ice hockey team's goalie.

Waryas joins Rachael Rooney (Brattleboro), Isaac Wilkinson (Bellows Falls) and Dylan Harden (Hinsdale) as winter winners. All four are now in the running for a $25 gift certificate from the Marina.

The nominees for the Jan. 5-11 athlete of the week are shown below. In order to vote, simply go to www.facebook.com/ReformerSports and "like" your choice.
