BRATTLEBORO — The town is looking for a finance director again.

In a news release issued Monday, Town Manager Peter Elwell announced that Andre Jaeger "did not successfully complete his probationary period and is no longer employed by the town of Brattleboro." Like it did January through May after former Finance Director John O'Connor retired, the town will contract with the accounting/auditing firm of Melanson Heath to provide interim finance director services.

In an interview, Elwell described probationary periods as a trial period for an employee who is new to the position where the employer has the ability to judge whether the person is going to be successful in that position. While he said he could not speak beyond the news release due to law regarding personnel records, he confirmed there was no evidence of malfeasance or misuse of town funds.

"And we do not suspect that," he said.

Jaeger was appointed May 20 after being employed as the budget director at Keene State College, a position that was eliminated May 1 as part of the college's reducing and restructuring of its administration and support staff, according to a town news release at the time. The town reported having 22 applicants for the position in its second search to find O'Connor's replacement.

An attempt to reach Jaeger was unsuccessful.
